“Life at university, with its intellectual and inconclusive discussions at a postgraduate level is on the whole a bad training for the real world. Only men of very strong character surmount this handicap”.....Paul Chambers

The Modern Jazz Classics Spotlight this week was originally recorded in November of 1998 at the Blue Note in New Y ork City. The combo called themselves THE VERY TALL BAND and they were indeed musically very tall! Two of the 4 musicians in the band are no longer with us; Milt (Bags) Jackson and Ray Brown while a third Oscar Peterson, no longer plays a full schedule as the infirmities of age are catching him and the fourth. drummer Kareen Riggins, being younger remains today much in demand.
The title of this disc is WHAT'S UP?: THE VERY TALL BAND (Telarc Jazz CD-83663). The band selected compositions by Johnny Hodges (Squatty Roo), Lester Young(Ad Lib Blues), Fletcher Henderson(Soft Winds), Harry Warren(The More I See You) and others.
Thank you, Telarc Jazz, for reissuing this wonderfully musical piece of jazz history!

This week's Modern Jazz Classics spotlight is the Jazzed Media CD ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE (Jazzed Media 1016), a tribute to the late Benny Carter from trombonist IRA NEPUS and guitarist STEVE MOORE. The music comes from the pen of the late Mr. Carter, with selections dating as far back as the thirties. Joining Nepus and Moore are a number of guest artists, including The Clayton Brothers (John and Jeff), Tamir Hendelman, Jeff Hamilton and others.
If you like jazz that really swings, this disc is for you. The musicianship is superb, the charts really swing and a good time is obviously being had by all concerned.
Thank you, Jazzed Media, for this great CD!
"Dr." Bob
